On this page you will find a range of books and resources which you may find useful to help you cope, understand and navigate your experiences of illness, caring or bereavement. 

 

​All of these resources have been reviewed by our Haven Practitioners and have been beneficial to a number of current and previous Haven clients.   

​

No one's experience of illness, caring or bereavement is the same as someone else's and as such not all of these resources may be helpful or appropriate for you.

Adult Resources

For people living with or who have a loved one living with a diagnosis of illness 

  • Lifting Your Spirits: Seven Tools for Coping with Illness, by Jane Alcoe - A unique book providing 7 self-help tools and audio tracks for coping with the physical and emotional challenge of illness. it introduces seven simple tools to develop inner strength and enhance well-being on all levels, along with uplifting audio relaxations, meditations and song.

For people who have been bereaved of a loved one â€‹

 

  • First Steps Through Bereavement, by Sue Mayfield - First Steps through Bereavement is an indispensable guide through the process of mourning a loved one. With useful sections on funerals, continuing to function, staying healthy, dealing with emotions, how to remember your loved one, and more, it will help you negotiate your way through grief. It also includes invaluable advice for close friends and relatives supporting others, including children who have been bereaved.

  • Angel Catcher: A Grieving Journal. A Journal of Loss and Remembrance, by Kathy Eldon and Amy Eldon Turteltaub -  this journal guides the user through the process of mourning and onward to a lasting sense of peace in the face of loss. With room for photographs, headings to inspire reflection, and space to record your own thoughts and memories

For people living with and caring for someone living with Dementia

  • First Steps to Living with Dementia, by Simon Atkins - This book provides an easy and accessible introduction for both those who live with dementia and those around them - to be aware of what it may mean, and to know what can be done to improve their mental health.

For general wellbeing 

  • The Wellbeing Journal - each page of this gorgeous journal has been thoughtfully crafted and it includes activities, colouring, drawing prompts, contemplative quotes and lots of space for you to write about your own thoughts, feelings and experiences.

  • The Little Book of Mindfulness, by Dr Patrizia Collard -  beautifully colour-illustrated book of 40 easy ways to be mindful every day. 

 

  • StressControl.org - Stress Control is a six session class that combines cognitive behavioural therapy, positive psychology and wellbeing to help you tackle the common mental health problems: anxiety, depression, panic, poor sleep, poor wellbeing, low self-confidence and low self-esteem.
