On Tuesday 7th November 2023, the South Lanarkshire College Hospitality Course - organised in part by student Marcán McGowan - hosted a heart-warming ‘BeautiFall’ charity cake bake sale that not only delighted taste buds, but raised vital funds for a local charity dedicated to making a positive impact in the local community.
The event, held at South Lanarkshire College, raised an incredible £453.30 in aid of The Haven – a charity committed to making a difference in the lives of children, young people, adults, and carers in Lanarkshire and beyond by providing free, practical, emotional, wellbeing and bereavement support to those affected by a life-limiting illness.
Marcán and his fellow students displayed their passion and drive by taking the initiative in organising this delightful bake sale, demonstrating the remarkable power of community spirit in supporting those in need and raising vital funds. Their commitment to The Haven’s cause, along with the Hospitality student’s culinary talents, created an event that brought together people from the college to enjoy delicious homemade treats while contributing to a worthwhile cause.
The Haven has a significant focus on empowering and supporting clients to develop self-management coping strategies and skills. This has proved to be very successful in supporting clients to utilise these new skills, which ultimately has a long-lasting positive impact on emotional and mental wellbeing, builds resilience, reduces loneliness and isolation and connects people to their communities.
Marcán said: "The Haven came up as an option after a few of our members met Paul during another event at the college. I think having that level of personal involvement really endeared everyone.
As for the event itself, I think it went great. We raised an amount of money that we're very happy with, and we had a lot of positive feedback from staff and students, sometimes before they even left the line!
Overall, the bake sale has been a fantastic experience for me. I think I learned a lot about what goes into organising an event and how to coordinate with outside parties to make it all come together. If we get the chance to run another charity event, The Haven will be at the top of our list!"
The charity cake bake sale was a remarkable success, with an array of delectable cakes, cookies, and sweet treats. Marcán and his fellow students worked tirelessly to prepare a range of beautifully decorated baked goods packed full of flavour which helped draw in a steady pace of customers.
Paul Hayward, Campaigns and Communications Officer for The Haven said: “The Haven plays a crucial role in providing support to individuals, families and carers to help them cope with the physical, emotional and practical aspects of illness, caring responsibilities and bereavement so they can face the future positively and with hope with our help.
Marcán and fellow Hospitality students at South Lanarkshire College are shining examples of the difference that passionate individuals can make in their local community. Their dedication to our cause has made a lasting impact, and fundraising activities like these all contribute to the sustainability of Haven services and the people we support.
The Haven would like to thank Marcán and his fellow students in South Lanarkshire College’s Hospitality Course and everyone who contributed to the success of the cake bake sale for raising vital funds”.
